I can't really give up the quest. I told some people I run with today about my dream for 2007. One (who is training for an ultra) really started to lecture me on getting to marathon distance before even wanting to do an Ironman.
Maybe I'm really naive. Maybe I'm biting off more than I can chew. Every time somebody says "no you can't, shouldn't, couldn't wouldn't do that" I want it more. I know you can look at me and I see I do not have an athletes body. I know you can say "but you've only been running one year" - but just don't tell me I can't do it!
It's almost driven me to obsession. It's kind of scary.
Ok.
So, for news - I've started group leading for the half marathon clinic. First night was good - there aren't too many in the 2:30/to complete group. The clinic is mostly made up of runners who will be doing 2:15 or faster (lots of 2:00 and sub 2:00 runners). I think I did ok - talked to a few in our group. Some of them showed up for the Sunday run today. We went out for 7KM and our average pace was 7:45. It was a nice comfy run for me and I'm looking forward to taking Sundays easy and getting to know some of the runners in the clinic.
I feel renewed about my goals - I'm not back in the pool until next week and I plan to take my bike out on Wednesday for a ride.
Things are looking up. I just wish I could sneak into the Great White North.... hahah!

One thing I've learned since I started is that everyone progresses at different levels. Some people manage to run a marathon in their first year and it takes some a few years. You can't really let someone else's experience guide your ability. From people I train with, I have been told that I should do the half ironman at least 3 or 4 times before considering a full im, but they all know that my progression has been slow. My IM goal is still at least 5 years away. Personally, I think running a full marathon is an important step to a full im but you'll find people that managed without doing one first. I understand determination, but you need to really evaluate your ability. The cut-off times in IM can be an issue and you wouldn't want to spend all that money to dnf. I know you'll do an IM and it will be a great day, just make sure your ready.
Ahh thanks Kerry :) I do appreciate your wisdom. I think I'll be doing a marathon this October but I cannot really use it as a basis for making my 2007 decision. I think I'll have to rely on training and determination. The cut off times are a worry for me - I keep looking at them and wondering if, really, I can finish within the time allowed.
