I had a nice taper LSD run of 12k on Sunday. By the end of the run my hair was pure white with frost and for some stupid reason I wore mascara that ended up on my chin.
This Sunday I am running a first - 18K. I'm a little apprehensive. I've had bowel problems at 10 - 12 KM's on every run. I've taken immodium even and nothing seems to work. Oh well. If we're doing the winter route there are bathrooms at Emily Murphy Park. The hard part is the running groups will be doing a maximum of 16K so I have to try and tack on that extra two at the end. There's nothing like coming home seeing a warm building with washrooms, coffee, the chance to STOP and having to keep pushing to go. I think that's why I'm not fond of races that have a loop for a course. Seeing the finish a couple of times is not my idea of a good time. I want to see it once - and only when I can (try to) sprint to it.
I got into the pool on Wednesday. Had a very good swim - 1KM took me approx 40 minutes... I'm a bit concerned how fast people will be going for the Coronation Tri? I looked at the results for the swim and I think I'm behind.
Anyway. We had our tempo run and I finally decided to try and run with the 2:15 pace group. We ran 4.5K with an average pace of 6:30. My body dragged on the way back and I felt the 'push' so to speak in my stomach near my ribcage (lungs?). I probably wouldn't have tried to go so fast but we were having a discussion on heart rate monitors and knowing when you're at your threshold pace and I wondered if I had truly ever been pushing myself on the tempo runs.
Ok, and the other thing on my mind lately. The expense. I really want to do Ironman 2007. I really really really do. I want to train - I want to commit to it. The expenses are daunting right now. Not so much the entry fee, but the travel, the new (used) bike, the wetsuit. The list goes on. How am I going to do it?

Hey Jordan! Sorry I haven't been around.
Don't worry about Coronation. I haven't done this one but I have done 2 other pool triathlons and they always put people in lanes with other people that swim their speed. My time is close to yours - I'm around 32 mins for 1000ms. Remember that swimming is the weakest sport for most triathletes.
The cost is definitely an issue! Are you group leading a RR clinic? If you can get a 30% coupon and you can use it for a wetsuit, but you need to go to 109st. Lots of people rent wetsuits for Ironman as well-you don't necessarily need to buy one.
The expense is all in getting your stuff, once you have it you're ok. It is expensive though. I try to compare it to smoking - if I smoked a pack a day it would cost $300 a month, so I can afford a bike. Although I never have smoked, people do manage to pay for it.
Do you swim at Millenium?
Hi Kerry :) I'm currently swimming at Coronation so I'm just getting used to that 50M swim length. I think practicing in that pool will help a little?
I plan to start group leading once my clinic is done - hopefully in the spring, then I can save up for that wetsuit... I have no idea how I'll afford the bike.
Any ideas on using a mountain bike for the first couple of tri's?
No problem using a mountain bike for the first couple of tris - you'll see quite a few in the shorter distance ones. I think Coronation tri actually has a division for mountain bikes. I've heard if you switch your tires to slicks (thin ones) it makes a big difference and it doesn't cost very much.
Keep your eye out for a used one. It may help if you go to a shop and try to find out what size frame fits you, so you have an idea when you're looking at used bikes. I'll check at home but someone gave me the link to a board where people sell their bikes. Triathletes are always upgrading so you can get a pretty good deal on a more entry level bike.
In the spring maybe we can meet up for some rides. I go with the RR group sometimes; there are a few IM finishers and people training for IM that are pretty helpful. I didn't know anything about biking when I started last year.
