a week of change?

Well, I did it. I ran 18K on Sunday. It was b-r-u-t-a-l but I finished it. Around 16K I ran out of water, couldn't seem to chew my cliff bar and felt like I had nothing left. I started talking to Lynne about her wedding day (in Maui) for inspiration. It helped but I could hardly move the rest of the day.

I had some booster juice for recovery and I've been hungry every day since the run.

I took Monday off as a rest day and brought my running gear into work to run on Tuesday at lunch. I was easily talked out of a run by a co-worker who wanted to window shop. I felt disappointed with myself for the rest of the day. I finally forgave myself on Wednesday when I went out for a run with Josette again.

We did 7.5K steady and up Emily Murphy Hill. I actually felt really good - Josette felt less so after the hill so we did situps again near the university which allowed her some time to recover. I could have run further and a little faster near the end. That was a very good feeling.

Last night I went to my first Triathlon Swim Club workout. It was in a 50m pool (which I am very not used to) and we swam numerous (I was too busy trying to stay afloat to count) lengths at various speeds. It was embarrasing when I had to do the backstroke since I have no idea how to backstroke! Sheesh. I think this is a good choice though - finding a group and a coach. The coach's name is Glen and he seemed quite kind - had some pointers for me... and said I did just fine.

Some of the women in the group have washboard abs. How in the world do they get that?

I hear you about the long runs! The RR "to complete" half marathon program suggests consecutive LSDs of18km/18km/20km. That was way too much for me last year. I managed the 2 18km runs but just couldn't do the 20. I wasn't recovering fast enough to keep doing them. I'm not going to do that this time either-it's too much for me to do that many long runs back to back. I think the middle one should be more like 12-14.

If you have a hill in your run-you are effectively hill training, so I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of people prefer to do that instead of hill training. Since my issues, I'm going to do Spin instead - it gives me a great workout for my legs without pounding on the hills. There is only 1 or 2 more weeks of hills for my group anyway.

Hopefully you can make the meet and greet next week - it will be nice to meet you.

I am really going to make a point of coming to the Meet and Greet next week. Yup, my next runs are supposed to be 18/20/6 and then race in Calgary. Three weeks later I'm doing the race in Edmonton. I'm not sure what do do in between... I'm going to try and keep the 18/20 but I'll go on how I feel. I'm not going to get hurt because I'm too rigid with my training plan.

Ha! Thanks for coming in and posting! I had to laugh about the chips :) Have you had coaching from Glen? I was supposed to go today for the long swim but I chickened out. I think I need a couple more 1 hour workouts before I go for the 2 hour one....
